Vilnius has been a multinational city since ancient times. In addition to Lithuanians, Jews, Poles, Russians and Belorussians lived here permanently. Many of them contributed to the greatest processes of industrialization, built factories, established banks, developed trade, and rebuilt the city.
Although there has often been a fragmentation between different communities, the contribution of each to the cultural, spiritual, social and economic life of the city is still important.
